Full-width clearing and ice treatment

Owners must clear bordering sidewalks, including corner links, and deal with drifts between snowfalls. Use salt or sand when needed on slippery surfaces. A narrow shovelled track does not meet the full-width requirement.

Selected arterial, downtown, high-traffic, pedestrian-crossover and school-crossing sidewalks are municipally plowed and salted. The City aims to work within 24 hours after snow ends, but weather and volume can affect service.

Owner responsibility remains

Even on a municipal-program sidewalk, the owner must ensure it is clear of snow and ice. Check the program map for actual selected segments; a street or neighbourhood name alone does not establish coverage.

The seniors and disability program is a separate bundled sidewalk-and-windrow service with eligibility, thresholds and a fee. Ordinary municipal route work is not an enrollment in that program.

Complaints and yellow notices

Snow or ice complaints are accepted after at least 24 hours of clear weather through Service Clarington or 905-623-3379, with the exact property address. A contractor takes before-and-after photographs at each complained-of property.

A yellow door hanger means the contractor has already carried out work. The municipality then invoices the clearing cost plus a $50 administration fee. Contact By-Law Services about a disputed invoice or work rather than assuming the hanger is only a future warning.
